Our purpose

The road ahead.

The Bahamas-UK Sports Academy exists to give young people the chance to grow through sport. Sport builds discipline, confidence and belonging. It opens routes into education, skills and work. The evidence for this is strong and growing, and the Academy's grants are made where the evidence is strongest.

The Academy also exists to deepen a friendship. The Bahamas and the United Kingdom share a sporting heritage that runs from the athletics track to the boxing ring, and a partnership across the Commonwealth that sport expresses better than almost anything else. The Academy uses that shared heritage to create exchanges, partnerships and opportunities that benefit young people in both countries.

The Academy is a grant-maker. It does not run programmes itself. It funds organisations in The Bahamas and the United Kingdom that use sport to change young lives, and it holds them to high standards of evidence, safeguarding and governance.

How we work. The Academy is privately funded. Its grants are decided by its independent Board of Trustees and by no one else. Independent evaluation is built into its grants from the start, and it publishes what it finds. It is not part of any government. It works in partnership with the British High Commission in Nassau, which serves as a founding strategic partner.
